Study finds soy foods and soy isoflavone supplements safe for men
Literature Review Finds No Indication that Soy Decreases Testosterone Levels
ST LOUIS, July 20 /PRNewswire/ — A new study published by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine finds that soyfoods and soy isoflavone supplements have no significant effect on male reproductive hormone levels in men. The literature review indicates that soy does not decrease testosterone levels.
Led by Jill M. Hamilton-Reeves, PhD, RD, of St. Catherine’s University, St. Paul, Minnesota, researchers assessed the effects of soy protein and soy isoflavones on measurements of male reproductive hormones. Findings, just published online in Fertility and Sterility, a publication of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, demonstrate no significant effect of soy protein or soy isoflavone intake on circulating levels of testosterone, sex hormone-binding globulin or free testosterone in men.
The comprehensive meta-analysis examined the existing scientific literature including all clinical studies examining soy’s effect on male reproductive hormones published before July 1, 2008. Fifteen placebo-controlled treatment groups with baseline and ending measures were analyzed. Thirty-two reports involving 36 treatment groups were also assessed in simpler statistical models. Studies published after July 1, 2008, which were not included in the meta-analysis, support the conclusions of the meta-analysis.
Reproductive endocrinologist William R. Phipps, MD, of the University of Rochester Medical Center, a co-author of the analysis stated, “As a high-quality source of protein that is relatively low in saturated fat, soy can be an important part of a heart-healthy diet and may contribute to a decreased risk of coronary heart disease.” He noted that some men have been reluctant to consume soyfoods due to concerns about estrogen-like effects of soy isoflavones, often referred to as phytoestrogens. But according to Phipps, “it is important for the public to understand that there is no clinical evidence to support these ideas. After conducting a comprehensive review of the existing literature, we found no indication that soy significantly alters male sex hormone levels.”
Men can benefit from soyfood consumption as a means to meet daily protein requirements and at the same time possibly also reducing their risk of heart disease.
Citing the research study, Lisa Kelly, MPH, RD, of the United Soybean Board, added,
“Soy is often praised for the positive role it can play in the diets of women. But, years of clinical research have shown that men stand to benefit from soy, too. I encourage men to incorporate soyfoods into a balanced and varied diet and talk to their healthcare provider about their own unique nutritional needs.”

Mango Madness Smoothie Recipe with Naturade NRG Protein Booster
Mango Madness Smoothie
1 cup pineapple juice
1/2 passion juice
1/2 tablespoon yogurt
1 tablespoon honey
1/3 cup Naturade NRG Protein Booster (Vanilla)
Naturade NRG Protein Booster is a time-tested combination of soy, milk and egg protein that supplies the complete amino acid profile your body needs to support the growth of bones and muscles. This all-natural protein blend assures that you get all the essential amino acids your body can not produce on its own, in just the right combination. You need Naturade NRG if you’re not getting enough dairy and egg products in your regular diet, especially if you’re also avoiding cholesterol and fat. In 1950, Naturade pioneered in promoting the health benefits of soy protein, with its NRG formula. Now, the Food and Drug Administration has agreed that 25 grams of soy protein daily may reduce the risk of heart disease when used in a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol. Over 40 clinical studies have shown that soy protein helps lower total and LDL cholesterol. One serving of Naturade NRG Protein Booster supplies almost two thirds of the soy protein you need daily to fight America’s number 1 killer of both men and women. Our Identity Preservation (IP) process assures you that the genetic integrity of our soybeans has been maintained throughout planting, harvesting and processing—just as nature intended. And Naturade NRG is formulated with high grade soy protein isolate without the extra fat or aftertaste of whole soybeans so you can confidently add protein to the foods and drinks you prepare with no carbohydrates and no added sugar.
You can also use Naturade NRG Protein Booster in cooking to add protein to sauces, soups, stews and casseroles or to cereals, pancakes and muffins. Vanilla Flavor has little taste so you can add it to most foods.

New research determines that dietary supplements rich in isoflavones may improve the function of arteries in stroke patients
A dietary supplement rich in isoflavones may improve the function of arteries in stroke patients, according to new research from Hong Kong.
The study is said to be the first randomised controlled trial investigating the effects of isoflavone supplements on improving the blood flow in the arm’s main artery in cardiovascular disease patients.
A daily 80 mg dose of isoflavones was associated with a one per cent increase in flow-mediated dilation (FMD), the measure of a blood vessel’s healthy ability to relax, according to findings published today in the European Heart Journal.
“Although the absolute increase in brachial diameter – one per cent – is small, the relative increase actually amounted to about 50 per cent because the mean average FMD in these stroke patients was about two per cent,” explained lead researcher Professor Hung-Fat Tse.
“These findings may have important implications for the use of isoflavone for secondary prevention in patients with cardiovascular disease, on top of conventional treatments,” wrote the authors in their EHJ paper.
Isoflavones from soy have been shown to provide a number of health benefits, including the promotion of heart health and the maintenance of bone health in post-menopausal women.
They have also been studied for their role in cancer prevention and slowing down the ageing process in peri-menopausal women, and isoflavone-rich supplements have proved to be a popular alternative to HRT for those wishing to control menopause symptoms without resorting to drugs.
Study details
Professor Tse and his co-workers from the University of Hong Kong recruited 102 stroke patients and randomly assigned 50 to receive daily isoflavone supplements (), and 52 to receive placebo, for 12 weeks.
“The specific dosage of 80 mg/day was chosen because previous studies have shown that isoflavone at this dosage was well tolerated by both men and women without significant side effects,” explained the researchers.
Ultrasound techniques were used to measure FMD at the start and end of the study. At the start, 80 per cent of the patients had an impaired FMD, defined as relaxation of less than 3.7 per cent. At the end of the 12 weeks, however, the patients receiving the isoflavone supplements experienced an improvement of one per cent, compared with the controls.
Moreover, the prevalence of impaired FMD after 12 weeks was only 58 per cent in the isoflavone group, compared to 79 per cent in the placebo group.
“The patients who had a lower initial FMD were found, in general, to respond with a larger absolute increase in FMD after receiving 12 weeks of isoflavone intervention, compared to patients who had a better baseline FMD in the first place,” said Prof Tse.
“These findings suggest that isoflavone reverses endothelial dysfunction in this group of patients with cardiovascular disease. This has important clinical implications, as the benefit of the [intervention] is conferred to the group of patients with the highest risks for cardiovascular events, and this effect persists, even at this rather late stage of the cardiovascular continuum.”
C-reactive protein
Supplementation with isoflavones was also associated with decreases in the levels of a protein called high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (CRP). This protein is a marker of inflammation and is reported to be an independent predictor of cardiovascular-related events.
“These findings suggested that isoflavone[s] alleviated vascular inflammatory stress and was an important component that mediated the reversal of endothelial dysfunction in this group of patients,” wrote the authors.
Mechanism
The mechanism by which the soy compounds is not totally understood, said Professor Tse. However, the anti-inflammatory effects may be related to the weak oestrogenic effect of the isoflavones. The female hormone oestrogen is known to protect against heart disease, said the researchers.
Despite the promising results of this clinical trial, the researchers stressed that it was too early to make any recommendations in this area.
“At this juncture, regular isoflavone supplement might not be advocated since the benefits and side effects of long-term supplementation are still unknown,” said Professor Tse.
“A balanced diet is still the top priority in promoting health. Diets with higher soy content might be beneficial due to the isoflavone contents. These food products also, in general, have higher contents of polyunsaturated fats, fibre, vitamins and less saturated fat.”

Probiotics and Colostrum for Cold and Flu Season
The immune system faces so many viruses, bacteria and other environmental threats throughout the year that it is getting more difficult to point to one season as needing the most attention. However, fall still showers its gold and red leaves on communities teeming with cold and flu viruses, as children return to school (read: infection incubators) and empty work offices return to full capacity with vacations mostly over. Consumers looking to bolster their defenses in early fall, in hopeful preparation for the coming cold and flu months, will turn to their trusty health products retailers for the latest offerings well-researched for immune benefits, especially relative to the dreaded cold season.
Whether in defense of the common cold, the flu or other challenges, empowering the immune system means increasing the production and strength of its white blood cells, such as T cells, macrophages and B cells. These cells coordinate a team effort to identify and destroy potentially dangerous invaders like influenza viruses and the collection of more than 200 rhinoviruses that can manifest as the common cold.
Outright prevention of these types of illnesses is considered an endless pursuit, scientifically, but a strong immune system heading into the typical cold and flu season could be the difference between getting one short, mild cold versus a couple lingering colds, or having insufferable symptoms from a cold or flu versus having few, if any, uncomfortable symptoms.
With a common cold, the most people generally hope for is to fight it off quickly and minimize the discomfort. In this case, consumers turn to dietary intervention—most often via supplements—to help fight infection before it happens, as opposed to over-the-counter (OTC) medications that don’t apply until after infection and symptoms rear their ugly heads. Advantage: supplements.
In the case of the flu, public health officials try to gauge which of the few influenza strains will be most prevalent in a given year and tailor the flu vaccine to this estimation. Some years this strategy works pretty well, but other times the guesses are wrong. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported this year’s flu vaccine was only about 44-percent effective, contributing to an elevated flu season. Barry Ritz, Ph.D., a nutritional immunologist at Drexel University, Philadelphia, tracks such data, in addition to his activities in the field of immune research. He noted on average, influenza virus infects 5 to 20 percent of the U.S. population annually, contributing to approximately 200,000 hospitalizations and 36,000 deaths, mostly among the elderly. Fortunately, nutritional immunology has generated positive results to counter such negative statistics. “My own research demonstrates that dietary interventions can have dramatic effects on the immune response to influenza infection,” he said.
In his study of how dietary supplements may affect the innate immune response to influenza infection, Ritz has focused on how bovine colostrum can potentially help stave off or manage flu infection.
Ritz explained colostrum provides antibodies that are important for establishing passive immunity in newborns; colostrum also contains numerous other compounds, such as bioactive peptides, that appear to enhance immunity even later in life. On specific research, he reported oral administration of bovine colostrum to neonatal and adult mice has been demonstrated to affect local intestinal immunity, including an increase in macrophage function and natural killer cells.1,2
“In my own research, in collaboration with La Belle Inc., I am working to determine if bovine colostrum supplementation may also result in systemic effects on innate immunity and increased resistance to influenza infection,” Ritz said.
It appears to be a good direction, as Italian researchers reported in 2007 that bovine colostrum, with its concoction of antibodies, vitamins, growth factors and other nutrients, represents an inexpensive therapeutic tool in prevention and treatment of several human microbial infections, including influenza.3
According to Ritz, consumers need to know that science supports bovine colostrum as an immune and intestinal health support supplement. In purchasing colostrum, he advised retailers and consumers to choose colostrum products that are produced in the United States, to assure the highest quality standards. “Depending on special needs, consider colostrum concentrates that are lactose- or casein-free,” he added.
An emerging immune force, colostrum has been studied alongside probiotics,4 which have a longer appearance in immune research and are beginning to take hold in the minds of educated consumers, thanks in large part to the growth of functional foods.
“More consumers are becoming aware that they help GI health,” confirmed Lia Peterson-Love, director of marketing for Sedona Labs and Nutri-Health Supplements. “I don’t think many people know that probiotics help support a healthy immune response.” She emphasized there is great science being done on probiotics, adding the immunomodulatory actions of probiotics are at the forefront of research.
In fact, Sedona Labs based its iFlora® Nasal Health multi-probiotic formula on 2003 clinical research in Switzerland that showed probiotics, taken orally, support a healthy immune response in the nasal mucus.5 The researchers concluded, “the ingestion of probiotics may enhance the immune barrier of the upper respiratory tract and therefore constitute a clinically preventive therapy.” The iFlora formula includes N-acetyl cysteine (NAC), a natural amino acid antioxidant that helps break up stagnant mucus, helping to support nasal and upper respiratory health.
“Although research showing that probiotics have an effect on the immune system was being published in the 1990’s … it takes awhile for consumer awareness and to catch up,” said Peterson-Love. “There is still much to be learned about probiotics and how they affect the immune system.”

Extracts of Horehound leaves and wild cherry bark cause apoptosis and cell growth suppression in human colorectal cancer cells according study published in national peer review medical journal, PubMed Central
The report shows that extracts of anti-inflammatory horehound leaves and wild cherry bark exhibit anti-proliferative activity in human colorectal cancer cells. Both horehound and wild cherry extracts cause suppression of cell growth as well as induction of apoptosis.
Our data show that anti-inflammatory M. vulgare (horehound) leaves and P. serotina (wild cherry) bark extracts have anti-proliferative activity in human colorectal cancer cells and the mechanisms may involve enhanced NAG-1 expression and/or down-regulation of ?-catenin signaling.

Colostrum found to be three times more effective than the flu vaccine
Recent studies have found Colostrum to be three times more effective against flu than the flu vaccine. A trial was conducted comparing colostrum to flu vaccine. The paper titled “Prevention of Influenza Episodes With Colostrum Compared With Vaccination in Healthy and High-Risk Cardiovascular Subjects” evaluated the efficacy of a 2-month treatment with oral colostrum in the prevention of flu episodes compared with anti influenza vaccination. Groups included healthy subjects without prophylaxis and those receiving both vaccination and colostrum. After 3 months of follow-up, the number of days with flu was 3 times higher in the non-colostrum subjects. The colostrum group had 13 episodes versus 14 in the colostrum + vaccination group, 41 in the group without prophylaxis, and 57 in nontreated subjects. Part 2 of the study had a similar protocol with 65 very high-risk cardiovascular subjects, all of whom had prophylaxis. The incidence of complications and hospital admission was higher in the group that received only a vaccination compared with the colostrum groups.
Colostrum, both in healthy subjects and high-risk cardiovascular patients, is at least 3 times more effective than vaccination to prevent flu and is very cost-effective.

Colostrum: Nature’s perfect immune booster!
Colostrum has been shown in numerous clinical studies to have both probiotic (organisms that have a beneficial effect human intestinal health) and antibiotic effects. It has also been shown to help repair intestinal tissue, support immune function, and increase vitality and stamina. It is one of the broadest-spectrum SuperFood supplements known to medical science. There are over 90 known compounds (with estimates of up to 250) components in colostrum that effect over 50 processes in the body ranging from immunity to regeneration and growth. All of these factors work together in perfect synergy to restore and maintain health. The primary components, divided into two classes, are immune factors and growth factors. Colostrum also contains a precise balance of vitamins, minerals and amino acids.
Colostrum’s Immune Factors
Immune factors in colostrum have been shown to help the body fight off harmful invaders such as viruses, bacteria’s, parasites, yeast’s and funguses. Each factor plays a specific role in our body’s defense against these attackers. Immune factors in colostrum balance the immune system and regulate the thymus (a key component of the immune system), control inflammation and protect against allergic reactions.
Human colostrum only contains 2% of this critical immunoglobulin. Bovine colostrum contains 38% immunoglobulins, specifically IgG (a protein that acts as an antibody). It is considered to be one of the body’s most important immunoglobulins because it is so effective against so many different microorganisms, many of which are resistant to current antibiotics. Bovine colostrum contains the highest levels of immune and growth factors possible, up to 4 times more immune factors than human colostrum. Colostrum also contains PRP (Polyproline-Rich-Peptides). Medical studies show that PRP in colostrum supports an under active immune system. PRP’s (support and regulate the thymus gland) the body’s master gland for the immune system. They stimulate an underactive immune system by helping it to move into action against disease-causing organisms. PRP in colostrum also helps balance an overactive immune system present in autoimmune diseases, making it a very valuable addition to help correct this devastating condition. Colostrum helps rebuild the immune system. Plus colostrum functions like a supplemental immune system, it is especially good for people with chronic depleted immune systems, or for those who have had long lasting or recurring infections.
